It’s very well-known that CBD oil and CBD products have a positive impact on our health and wellness. But did you know it can also work wonders for our pets? Researchers believe CBD may have the potential to treat a range of diseases in both humans and animals, and many retailers are selling CBD products for pets.
Like humans, pets have an endocannabinoid system, which means the benefits of CBD oil for pets may mirror the same ones that we experience. In a 2018 survey, pet owners endorsed hemp CBD products and treats for pets because they noticed improvements in many ailments, including inflammation, anxiety, pain, digestive system issues, and sleep.
Check out just a few of the reasons your pet could benefit from the use of CBD and meet our NEW partner at the end of our blog.
Pain relief
Many pets have shown significant relief from pain when they’re administered CBD. CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties can help calm the inflammation in your pet’s joints, relieving their pain. If your pet has arthritis, a fairly common ailment that occurs as they age, you can try giving them CBD products to help ease their pain.
Reduction in anxiety
If your pets are often afraid and anxious, you can help lower their stress levels and calm their anxiety with CBD. Separation anxiety, fireworks, strong storms, and car rides are common stressors that startle pets, and administering CBD can significantly relieve these anxieties.
Immune system support
Because CBD helps manage inflammation, it can support your pet’s immune system and help with a variety of autoimmune conditions like canine lupus, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and immune-related arthritis.
Reduction in convulsions and seizures
CBD oil has shown a lot of promise for treating seizures and convulsions in dogs. Whether your pup has a seizure disorder like epilepsy or occasional idiopathic seizures, studies have shown using CBD oil can be beneficial in reducing seizure activity. CBD oil affects the CB1 receptors in your dog’s brain, calming overactive neurons and improving seizure control.
Increases appetite
Many pet owners that have used CBD with their pets have noticed an improvement in their appetite, as well as a reduction in nausea. CBD oil stimulates appetite and targets specific receptors to activate a bodily response that suppresses the feeling of nausea.
Is CBD oil safe for pets?
CBD oil is safe for cats and dogs when given in the correct amount. Because of the anatomy of their kidneys and livers, cats are more sensitive to medications and toxins. This means you need to get high-quality CBD oil from reputable sources, like ours, that contain no contaminants and use natural ingredients.
While our pets have an endocannabinoid system like us, it doesn’t mean they can supplement with cannabis in the same ways. Just as their sense of smell and sight are more sensitive than ours, so is their endocannabinoid system. Therefore, pets should be given CBD based on their weights and sizes, starting slowly with a low dose and working up if needed. Always read product labels before giving CBD to your dog or cat and monitor their behavior for the possibility of side effects.
Before making any supplemental or dietary changes to your pet’s regimen, please consult your veterinarian first.
Will CBD get animals high?
CBD derived from hemp will not get pets high. In the United States, all hemp must be grown in accordance with the 2018 Farm Bill. Under this bill, all hemp plants must have a concentration of 0.3% or lower of the THC molecule, which is the psychoactive component in marijuana.
How to use CBD for pets
The most common way to administer CBD to cats and dogs is by using CBD drops and tinctures. Just add two drops of CBD oil for pets to their food per 10 pounds of their weight. If your pet doesn’t eat all of their food in one sitting, split up the servings of CBD.
At Made By Hemp, we care just as much about our pets and their health as we do our own. That’s why we’ve partnered with the BISSELL Pet Foundation (BPF). We donate a portion of our pet product sales to the foundation to help support its efforts in rescuing pets and ending pet homelessness.
In 2011, Cathy Bissell founded BPF as an extension of her love for animals and her commitment to their welfare. So far, BPF has awarded millions of dollars to its partner network of animal welfare organizations and has impacted the lives of an incalculable number of pets across all 50 states and Canada.
