Is Your Natural Face Toner Working for or Against You?
Have you ever scowled at your oily hair and thought, “Seriously, I just washed you yesterday!”? A common reason for this torment is similar to why toners are important.
Why Your Hair is Oily…
Our scalp naturally produces a slightly acidic oil, called sebum. It coats our hair strands and lubricates the scalp, which is constantly replicating and shedding new cells. This process is totally natural and necessary for our skin. When oil production is working properly, the oily appearance of your hair is usually very manageable.
Ask yourself one important question: how often do you wash your hair? If the answer is every day or every other day, it’s possible you are washing too often and causing your scalp to overproduce oils. If you swap to washing your hair with shampoo just twice a week, it may take a couple of weeks for your scalp’s oil production to be “re-trained”, but once you get over that hump, you should find that by the time one of your shampoo days comes up, you don’t feel too oily.
Let’s clarify one thing — we’re not saying you can only shower twice a week! We’re saying only shampoo your hair twice a week. For all other showers, stick to water only.
How to Use Natural Face Toner
Toners are capable of doing harm or good, so it’s important to use them correctly.
A common misuse of toners is using them to remove makeup. Make sure you’re using a cleanser or gentle wipes for that step. Otherwise, you might be removing good oils from the skin. Just like with your hair, if you keep disrupting the balance by removing all those natural oils, your skin might start overproducing to keep up.
Natural moisturizers and serums are usually chock-full of essential oils that nourish your skin. If your skin is overproducing oils on top of these oils, you might find yourself in a spotty situation.
However, when you use the right type of toner, at the right time, it can be amazing.
Toners typically contain alcohol, which can be a little harsh for some skin types. That’s why we prefer toners with a natural alternative, called hydrosol. The difference here is that, rather than focusing on pH balance or stripping the skin of its natural oils, hydrosol toners offer a water-based hydration to deliver water-soluble vitamins and minerals and prepping your skin for the next steps in your skin care routine.
Choose a water-based, natural face toner with hydrosol to compliment your other natural skin care products that feature a powerful profile of essential oils. Allow your skin to absorb the vitamins and minerals in your natural face serum or moisturizer, while leaving your skin feeling fresh and clean.
