You’ve seen the news, science, and anecdotes about hemp oil supplements…but with such a broad range of products available, you may find yourself unsure how to use them.
Using hemp oil properly is important, but it’s worth noting that some people opt to use it in their own way, and that’s completely fine. There’s no “one way” to take hemp oil, but there are mainstream methods you should know about. Let’s delve right in and discuss all your options.
How to Use: Pure Hemp Oil Concentrates
One of the most popular ways to take hemp oil is a pure concentrate. This is a pastey oil that’s extracted right from the hemp plant; no other ingredients are mixed in.
When you order a pure hemp oil concentrate, it will likely be packaged in an oral syringe. If you’re not expecting that, it can come as a surprise and your first thought may be, “is this an injection?!”
Don’t worry, that’s not the case.
To take this pure oil, simply dispense the desired amount onto your finger or the back of a spoon or whatever you find works best for you. There’s no one-size-fits-all method for dispensing pure hemp oil, but we personally find those two options to be easiest.
Make sure you’re very cautious in this step. Hemp oil concentrates are natural oils, so each harvest WILL vary in flavor and consistency. Sometimes it’s a pretty thick oil, whereas other batches will be runny. This is completely normal and to be expected.
Now, place the oil under your tongue. Wait 60-90 seconds (the longer, the better) and then swallow.
Tips & Suggestions
There are a few important matters I’d like to discuss here. First, the reason placing the oil under your tongue is important is because the mouth is full of capillary glands that soak up the oil so it can quickly get into your system. By the time you go to swallow the oil, a significant amount will have already absorbed.
Secondly and I cannot stress this enough pure hemp oil does not taste good. Anyone who has used it before can attest to this. Each harvest renders slightly different flavors, because the flavor (and aroma) actually comes from compounds within the hemp plant, called terpenes. Just like with cannabinoids, you don’t know exactly which ones have developed in the plant until the oil has been extracted and tested. So it’s impossible to guarantee how each batch will taste.
“Pure hemp oil tastes like you grabbed a handful of dirt and grass and ate it. Sometimes it’s a little spicy, too.” – The General Consensus
Sublingual (under the tongue) use of hemp oil is convenient because you don’t have to taste it until your 60-90 seconds are up. If your pallet can take it, we believe pure hemp oil concentrates are the best way to add a large amount of cannabinoids to your daily regimen. If you’re sensitive to the taste but are determined to use it, try drinking juice as you swallow the oil.
Recently, the team here at Made By Hemp had a little taste testing party with our Gold Label Concentrate. The expressions on people’s faces were rather amusing. But in the end, we discovered something important! Drinking apple cider or orange juice does a phenomenal job masking hemp’s potent flavor.
How to Use: Hemp Oil Tinctures
Hemp oil tinctures (or “drops”) are liquid supplements packaged in a glass bottle. They will come with either a dropper or spray top for easy dispensing.
Tinctures are very popular, for good reason. They offer a unique opportunity for manufacturers to add other robust ingredients, like coconut oil, terpenes, spearmint, or other natural herbs and essential oils.
Plus, they taste pretty good. At least, their flavor is fantastic as compared to pure hemp oil concentrates.
To take a hemp oil tincture, simply dispense the desired amount under your tongue. This is called “sublingual” use. Now, wait 60-90 seconds and then swallow the oil. You shouldn’t taste anything until that last part. If you find the flavor is still too potent, try drinking juice along with it.
Hemp oil tinctures come in a wide array of sizes, flavors, and strengths. Keep that in mind as you’re trying them…if you don’t like one, there are other brands that may suit you better in terms of flavor and potency.
How to Use: Hemp E-Liquid
Hemp oil e-liquid (“vapes”) are very straight forward. Either fill a vaporizer with the oil, or buy a pre-filled disposable vaporizer to completely curtail the hassle of maintaining a vaporizer pen. If you are using a re-usable vaporizer pen, keep in mind you will need to replace the tank and/or coil once in a while.
Vaping is a uniquely powerful way to take hemp oil, because the act of vaping is considered relaxing in itself. For many people, they truly make a great pair.
“When I’m feeling anxious or in serious need of relaxation, I immediately grab my vaporizer.”
How to Use: Topical Hemp Oil for Skin
For dry, inflamed or aging skin, people often try hemp oil topical solutions to target specific areas. Your skin is your largest organ, so it’s important to keep it moisturized and balanced.
Hemp oil topicals, like the Muscle & Joint Salve, make it easy to go right to the source of the problem. Using them is easy and straight-forward; gently massage it into the targeted skin area. Repeat as needed throughout the day. Hemp oil topicals range in consistency and in how oily they are; it’s entirely up to your personal preference.
